1) The online Blue Circle Test - an interactive web application that we have developed to showcase the risk factors of type 2 diabetes - is now available. The Test allows visitors to learn about the risk factors and establish a personalized risk profile with information about the positive actions that they can take to reduce their risk of type 2 diabetes. The Blue Circle Test is available in English, French and Spanish.
You can view and do the test at http://bit.ly/acIkx9 . We would very much appreciate your feedback so please send any comments to wdd@idf.org. We encourage you to include the Blue Circle Test on your website or webpage, or promote the Test by linking to it. You could also use the Test as part of your World Diabetes Day event to engage participants, particularly the general public.

2) Global activity roundup - India, Thailand and El Salvador in the spotlight We continue our look at global activities planned for World Diabetes Day this November. We'd like to shine the spotlight this week on India, Thailand and El Salvador:
In India, the Diabetic Association of India has planned a week-long series of activities to mark World Diabetes Day in Chennai, Kolkata and Mumbai. These include events for children with diabetes such as a drawing competition, quiz, fashion show and a selection of education seminars for health professionals. Other awareness activities include the lighting of the association headquarters in blue and the release of balloons with the World Diabetes Day logo. The week will culminate on 20 November with a grand panel for general practitioners on the theme of 'Diabetes and Heart Disease'.
In Thailand, the Diabetes Association of Thailand will also be organizing a 'World Diabetes Day Week' throughout the country on 7-14 November. Key events planned include diabetes screenings and educational activities in more than 2,000 hospitals and primary care units, a national Radio and TV awareness campaign, and public seminars on the prevention and management of diabetes. 14 November will be proclaimed by the Ministry of Public Health as "No Sugar Day", with awareness activities planned in schools, hospitals and workplaces to promote healthy and well-balanced diets.
In El Salvador, the Asociación Salvadoreña de Diabéticos will be marking World Diabetes Day with a diabetes walk and fair on 13 November. The association will be providing free blood glucose and blood pressure testing and offering visitors the opportunity to take part in a variety of physical activities. People with diabetes will be encouraged to measure their blood glucose before and after exercising to highlight the benefits of physical activity in the management of diabetes.

4) The road to the UN NCD Summit
As some of you may be aware, in May of this year the United Nations General Assembly unanimously passed a Resolution calling for a UN Summit on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) to be held in New York in September 2011. The Summit is a momentous opportunity to put NCDs on the global health and development agenda, and provides a global platform from which the world can be moved from rhetoric to action. The International Diabetes Federation and its partners in the NCD Alliance have developed a comprehensive plan that sets out a programme of work in the lead and aftermath to the Summit.
- You can find more information about the Summit at http://bit.ly/cqaVKi.
- Watch a video message from IDF President Jean Claude Mbanya welcoming the UN NCD Summit: http://bit.ly/9OwLmy.
World Diabetes Day this year provides an ideal platform to disseminate and promote the key messages and objectives of the Summit. We'll be using the remaining newsletters to highlight some of these messages, and we encourage you to adopt and promote them in your communications activities this November.
Messages for the UN NCD Summit:
- O is for outrage
- NCDs: a major cause of poverty and an urgent development issue
- It's time for the world to wake up to the reality of the global NCD epidemic
